Focusing on Outcomes
2024 goal: Read 20 books
I ended up reading 27 (nice!), but I noticed some things that I didn't like.
The way I had set up this goal encouraged:
- reading small books
- small books take less time to read!
- reading fast (don't take time to comprehend and digest)
- reading fast == more pages per minute == more books per year
Were these behaviors aligned with my desired outcome?
No!
Damn.
My desired outcome was to:
- get into the habit of reading every day
- read books that were interesting to me
- expand my horizons
2025 goal: Spend 7,300 minutes reading
The way I set up this goal encourages:
- reading every day
- it's hard to stay on track if I miss a day of reading
- reading books that are interesting to me
- I'm more likely to be motivated to read if I'm interested in the material
Look at the goals you've set.
Do they encourage behavior that aligns with your desired outcome?
